The Hirtzels
Missionaries to the people of Vanuatu
My family and I have been called to reach the people of Vanuatu. My wife, Ari, and I have been married for ten years and have two daughters: Rashelle, who is nine years old, and Terra, who is six years old.
At the age of six I was saved through the witness and teaching of my parents. At the age of eighteen the Lord impressed on my heart the desperate need for missions. I attended a mission college in New Zealand where I finished my schooling. During this time I received the opportunity to begin preaching. In 1998 I graduated from Independent Baptist Bible College Rotorua that was started and administered by Rev. Steve Spore, a long term missionary to New Zealand. The Spore’s have since changed fields to Vanuatu, where they have started Grace Bible Baptist Church and Grace Bible Baptist Primary School.
For the last few years we had been working in the Children’s Ministry at Faith Baptist Church in Chehalis, Washington. We also started a nursing home ministry in the local community and completed our internship under Dr. Modlish during this time.
I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Vanuatu, getting to know the people, language, and culture in a more personal way. While in Vanuatu the Lord made the desperate need of the Gospel to the Ni-Vanuatu, the native people of Vanuatu, abundantly clear. The majority of the Ni-Vanuatu live in constant fear and oppression from the spirits they worship in their ‘Kastom’ religions and have never heard the gospel of Christ and the hope of Salvation only it can bring.
Upon arriving in Vanuatu, we started working with the Spore’s, while we are learning the language and culture. We are reaching out to the gangs of teens and young adults that wander the streets aimlessly, bringing them the hope of salvation and the knowledge of Christ. Once we have fully acculturated we will continue to reach out farther as the Lord directs; training men and women for service and planting churches throughout the country of Vanuatu.
